10. JOE

Due to the national lockdowns, Joe had to wait over 18 months to play his first rugby match but his enthusiasm has never waned!

How much experience did you have of playing rugby before joining the Corsairs?
I never played at school though I had attended a few training/beer sessions at my local club in Leamington while I was in my twenties. For years I have watched the game and decided to join the Corsairs at the beginning of 2020 (not long before the first national lockdown). I felt that as it was a new club that meant it would be a blank canvas for me to learn the game from scratch.

How did you first hear about Coventry Corsairs RFC?
Through a mate who plays for another IGR Club.

What made you decide to join the club?
I wanted to find a group of like-minded active people. When I heard there was a new inclusive rugby club in Coventry, that ticked a lot of the boxes for me.

What's the best part of being a member of the Corsairs?
It's been one of the most consistent things for me during a tough couple of years - even when we were trapped inside, away from the pitch. There's a real sense of community within the Corsairs and that continues to grow week on week as new players join.

What are you most proud of achieving since joining the club?
I finally played my first game of "proper" rugby in October against the Bristol Bisons and although I didn't score a try (I'm a hooker - go figure!), I was proud of my consistency in the scrums and for not losing a contact lens!

What is your nickname within the Club and why?
My shirt has the name 'Finbarr' on the back which provided a lot of confusion when it was sat in someone's car boot for a year and no one knew who Finbarr was. My Dad liked the name when I was born (and it's grown on me). Other than that it's usually "Broseph" or just "Meade".

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of joining the club?
Come along to a training session on a Tuesday or Thursday night - you won't look back!.
